Magnetic Flowmeter

What Is an Electromagnetic Flowmeter?

  • An electromagnetic flowmeter (also known as a mag meter) is a type of flow measurement device.
  • Its primary function is to measure the flow rate of conductive liquids (such as water, slurries, or chemicals) by utilizing electromagnetic principles.
  • Unlike other flowmeters, it doesn’t have moving parts or obstructions within the flow path.

French engineer G.G. Coriolis first noted this effect, which plays a role in ocean tides, weather patterns, and now—flow measurement!

How Does It Work?

  • The key principle behind electromagnetic flowmeters is Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.
  • A magnetic field is generated across the flow tube (usually made of non-conductive material).
  • When the conductive fluid flows through the tube, it cuts across the magnetic lines of force.
  • According to Faraday’s law, this movement induces a voltage across electrodes placed on the tube walls.
  • The induced voltage is directly proportional to the flow velocity and, consequently, the flow rate.
  • French engineer G.G. Coriolis first noted this effect, which plays a role in ocean tides, weather patterns, and now—flow measurement!

Features and Advantages:

  • Accuracy: Electromagnetic flowmeters provide high accuracy, especially for conductive fluids.
  • Wide Range: Suitable for various flow rates—from low to high.
  • No Moving Parts: Minimal maintenance and no mechanical wear.
  • Bi-Directional Measurement: Measures flow in both directions.
  • Non-Intrusive: No obstruction in the flow path.

This force causes a phase shift, which correlates directly with the mass flow rate.

Applications:

  • Water Management: Used in water treatment plants, distribution networks, and sewage systems.
  • Chemical Industry: Monitoring corrosive liquids and chemical processes.
  • Food and Beverage: Measuring flow in beverage production, dairy processing, etc.
  • Pulp and Paper: Monitoring pulp slurries and paper stock. NM
